Chapter Eight

The late afternoon sun casted shadows along the road as large trees and farmland lined the highway. They’d decided on following Ethan’s recommendation; taking two separate vehicles. Ethan and I in one, the others in another. At Liam’s recommendation, both were SUV’s. He also wanted us to stop by a shopping centre on our way south to get a car-seat for Jackson.

I stared out the window, watching the flora swish past. I had my hand just outside the window, riding the wind pocket like a roller-coaster. I closed my eyes and took in the sensations of the SUV’s aerodynamics. Thinking about how the curves of the car impacted the drag and speed. How the air moved around us like a liquid, pushing against my fingers and making me feel as though I were flying.

I smiled as I focused on the world around us. Just letting everything speak to me. Telling me their histories and futures. I moved my fingers along the metal of the door, listening to it’s vibrations. Seeing in my mind's eye the father who first bought it for their son’s eighteenth. How five years later that same boy, now a man, conceived his first child in the backseat. And how he had later sold the SUV to a backpacker, to whom we’d just stolen it from.

My gaze moved to Ethan as he stared intently towards the road. “Hey, Ethan.”

“Yeah?”

“I think you should start writing your experiences down.”

“That’s not my job,” he said with a soft laugh.

“Who cares? You might find it fun.”

“So, is this a suggestion from you, or from them?”

“From me,” I said. “I think it’ll be great to tell the story from a guardian’s perspective.”

He fell silent, keeping his eyes on the road, resting his arm on the door. “Let me think about it.”

I checked on the others through the side mirror. Misha was hesitant to let Ethan and I drive alone, but his argument was sound and she was outvoted. It made more sense to keep us separated, just in case the worst happened. And two guardians looking after an infant archivist just made more sense.

As a road stop with a cafe appeared, I looked at Ethan with pleading eyes. And, after a quick glance, he smiled, then said, “Sure.”

We turned into the parking lot, and I jumped out of the SUV to stretch my entire body. Endorphins flooded my brain as the blood flow filled my muscles. I’d been cramped for a few hours, and it was great to be able to move around again.

Misha pulled up beside me and grinned as she got out. She too stretched her muscles, then swung her arms around.

“Who’s hungry?” she asked.

“Well, I definitely am,” I said.

Liam stayed with the SUVs, while the rest of us went into the shop. I moved around the small isles and spied a basic, black, hard covered notebook. I picked it up and flicked through the thin, lined pages. I glanced over to Ethan as he purchased a few sandwiches. Whether he knew it or not, it would be good for him to write something.
